What Does It Take To Become An Animator?

Did you grow up watching Tom and Jerry, Donald Duck, or Scooby-Doo and wondered how these characters are brought to life? How do they move, talk, and do every possible thing you could do? Or were you normal? (Little satire here, friends) Well, whatever the case is, today you will find out the ins and outs of this cartoon world, more precisely, Animation.

First things first, what is Animation?

It is a technique of photographing straight rows of drawings or positions of figures to create an illusion of movement. As our eyes can only retain an image for roughly 1/10 of a second when multiple images appear in fast succession, the brain treats them as a single moving image. There are different kinds of Animation:

       Traditional Animation

       2D Animation

       3D Animation

       Motion Graphics

       Stop Motion

How you can be an Animator?

Everyone can be an Animator, including you. It's no rocket science; all you need to do is follow some basic steps. Here is the list of steps you need to follow:

Get a degree: In the world of free courses from YouTube and other platforms, why is a college degree even necessary? It's not even cool anymore to attend colleges for years and finally get a robe and a hat, right? Wrong! If you want to be an animator, start with a degree first. Choose a college of your choice, and it needn't be the best Animation college in India. Enrol in a basic BSc Animation and Multimedia course, which is enough for you to get going. It will increase your knowledge on the subject, refine your necessary skills, and provide you with technical know-how to operate various animation tools. Apart from that, you will also be a graduate.

Build your portfolio: If you are thinking about your next post on social media, think no more. Start posting your work sample there. You can also build a website and put your work there for display. It will help you tremendously in impressing your hiring manager and landing that dream job right away.

Gain experience: Having a degree and a portfolio isn't enough, you will need work experience as well. While you are graduating (or maybe you are self-learning) you should focus on gaining some real-time work experience by joining a firm as an intern or a part-time employee. You can also kickstart your freelancing career if that's what your vision is in the long run. Gaining experience will help you understand the market from within, get better clarity and expand your knowledge in the sector.

Scope of Animation in India

With the increasing demand for high-end visuals by businesses, OTT platforms, and production houses, amongst others, the Animation and VFX industry has become the golden egg for Animators today. According to sources, the Indian Animation and visual effects industry can take hold of 20-25% of the global AVCG market. If that's not enough, the Animation industry in the country is expected to grow up to 129 billion INR in 2023.

All these stats show that the scope is incredibly high for you. The onus is on you to develop your skills and make yourself perfect for the role. You can start with a BSc or aand rank your skills accordingly.

Conclusion

Gone are the days when people considered Animation as a course with limited opportunity. Today, the tables have shifted. The Animation industry is growing rapidly in the country, and the demand for quality Animators is sky-high. If you are someone with a knack for giving life and motion to drawings and images, the land of opportunity awaits you.
